Step 4
Opening the File
Now that you have the file on your computer, it's time to open it up and see what's in it! The first thing you do before we do anything is to open up Windows Explorer and selecting your C:\Downloads folder. So now, you're probably thinking why we decided to stick in this step when all it takes is to double click the file. Well, I'm afraid it's not as easy as that. See, every single file that exists are of different types and each have different extensions (for example, in the file "example.ext," the "ext" part would be called the extension) which help your computer to figure out what to do with it. For example, a Microsoft Word Document file would have a DOC extension, and a zip file (we're going to explain later, calm down) would have a ZIP extension. Using this information, your computer can decide which program to open the file with. So, for example, with any file that has a DOC extension, your computer knows to use Microsoft Word to open it up.
Most files which you download off of the Internet are going to have extensions of EXE and ZIP. These two types are the most common, where EXE is an executable file that Windows is capable of running without any special software, and a ZIP file is a file which has other files in it that have been "compressed" to make the file smaller, so, in turn, less time to download. With EXE files, it's simply a matter of finding the file, and double-clicking the file to open it; however, ZIP files are a bit more tricky. Windows does not have native support for ZIP files, so that means you have to go and download a special piece of software to open up these ZIP files. I'm going to recommend to you Winzip, which is one of the most popular ZIP file-utilities out there today. So, using the knowledge that you have already obtained from this guide, you can click on this link to download Winzip. This file has an EXE extension, which means you can just find it and double click it to open it up. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Winzip.

Now that you have Winzip installed, it's time to open up that ZIP file! Find the file (using Windows Explorer) and double-click it. Winzip will now open, and will display the contents of that ZIP file. Click on the "CheckOut" button, and click on the OK button. Winzip will begin working and after a little (or long) wait, it will have opened a new window with shortcuts to files in that ZIP file. Double-clicking on one of those shortcuts will run the file. Once you're finished using the ZIP file, simply close down Winzip, and it will ask you if you wish to delete the CheckOut folder--simply click the Yes button.
