Conclusion
The SMC Barricade 4-port broadband router is an excellent choice for people who want to share their broadband (or even dial-up) connection amongst multiple computers. The Barricade has just the perfect combination of features to not only share an Internet connection, but to build an entire network around. Its 4-port 10/100Mbps auto-sensing switch allows connectivity of up 4 computers natively and an even larger number by simply connecting more hubs and switches to it. The built-in firewall will protect your network from the harms of the Internet and its NAT feature will allow seamless connection from all of your computers to the Internet. An added extra is the built-in print server, which allows every computer in your network to share a single printer without the need for a dedicated computer. Furthermore, configuration of the Barricade can be performed through a simple, easy-to-use web interface, although the expandability of some of the configuration settings, such as the number of special applications and server port mappings, can be questionable.
If you're looking for an all-around network center for your network and don't have the luxury or patience of dealing with a dedicated server system, then the SMC Barricade should be at the top of your "must have" list. On the other hand, if you don't mind spending an extra $50-100 when compared to purchasing a "regular network" and don't mind the hassles of running a dedicated Internet connection sharing computer, then the Barricade shouldn't appeal to you. Either way, the SMC Barricade is an excellent all-in-one networking product for the home or business user.
